Electric car battery packs, just like the battery packs in consumer gadgets like smartphones and laptop computers, may appear to give you access to as much charge as absolutely possible all the time. But while that might appear to be the case, most electric cars (and most gadgets) only let you use between twenty and eighty percent of real capacity when discharging and charging.
Why? It’s all to do with the way the battery is constructed. But it doesn’t explain why Tesla used to let customers enter into a ‘range’ mode of operation to temporarily give access to a little more battery capacity for long distance trips — nor does it explain why other automakers generally don’t.
